How does the Birthday Buddies program work?

Select a birthday child.

Our partner organizations identify deserving children with upcoming birthdays. Toys & gifts for each child are added to our Learning Express online registry platform. You can choose a child who has not yet received a birthday gift.

As a mom and pediatrician, I know the importance of birthdays. Birthdays not only mark the passage of time, but also give opportunities to highlight a child’s uniqueness and value.

Chattanooga Birthday Buddies came to life from a moment of inspiration while my husband and I were putting together Easter baskets for our 3 sons. We were at Learning Express Toys which has a “Birthday Bin” toy registry. My husband said, “They should name it Birthday Buddies.” An idea immediately popped into my mind involving a program where children who may not be able to receive gifts on their birthdays could be supported by the community.

I searched and reached out to local organizations who serve children and found that there is a need for children’s birthday gifts for local non-profits.

I personally meet with the organizations involved in Birthday Buddies with the goal of learning about the services they provide, understanding their needs, and creating lasting relationships.

I hope Birthday Buddies accomplishes three things:
  1. Children who would otherwise not be celebrated on their birthday feel seen and loved.
  2. Conversations about gratitude and giving spring up among individuals, businesses, and families.
  3. Increased awareness of and involvement with local non-profit groups that serve children.
